We’re unveiling the most extensive and only prep school poll of its kind and we’ll take a look at Coastal Christian Prep (Va.), which checks in at No. 23.
It’s not a group that has received a ton of fanfare on the individual end, but coach Walter Webb is confident they can surprise some people this season.
``This team can execute,” Webb said. “They are a smart group and play well together.”
Parkdale, Md., native Adam Nicholson, a 6-4, 180-pound wing, is a pure off-guard who can get to the bucket and will likely put up big numbers for Coastal this year. He’s explosive, is tough to guard, and is a low-major guy.
Dave Shelton, a 6-foot point guard who hails from Decatur, Ga., has the inside track to run the club. He’s a tough defender and is likely headed to the D-2 ranks.
Webb will rely on 6-8, 245-pound big man Aaron O’Reggio up front. He’s big and strong around the basket and the Laurel, Md., native could be a legitimate mid-major player for the right program.
O’Reggio’s teammates up front will likely be 6-4 ½, 190-pound wing Daniel Conway, a tough post-grad from Maryland, and 6-6, 210-pound Virginia native Robert Shuler, an athletic shot-blocker.
The first guy off the bench is Jonathan Garcia, a 6-0 sophomore point guard who just came over from Puerto Rico.
``He’s really a starter, but it’s tough to start him,” Webb said. “He’s got tremendous ability and is a high-major kid.”
Webb will use 6-4 wings Brandon Winningham (Chesapeake, Va.)) and Jason Romer (New York City, N.Y.) – as well as 6-foot point guard Garron Calloway (Ohio) off the bench. Seniors Julian Thomas, a 6-8, 230-pound power forward from New York City, and Terrell Evans, a 6-8, 220-pound native of Brooklyn, will give the team help up front.
``We’re going to definitely need someone to back us up at the four and five-spot,” Webb added. “But we can definitely win games with what we have.”
